[MU] - WEARING OUR VINTAGE MISERY
[It is not yet time for the monthly Storytelling, and yet, you find yourself by the campfire of your dreams nonetheless. Opposite you sits an antlered polar bear, currently in the midst of massaging their horns.]
[They seem as tired as they sound.]
Many of you have already met with the people known as the Jormun, and learned of the coming death of the sun. I am here to confirm that reality, and the week of darkness that shall be upon us in two weeks' time. [A pink tongue licks at pointed teeth.] Yet again, we find ourselves in the midst of a situation in which none of you have asked to be involved in. However, I can assure that you will not be alone.
The entire world is preparing itself. The Jormun are here to guide and assist, and to be assisted in turn. I will join you in this fight where I can.
For many of you, the shift in climate is something for which none of us were prepared. I would like to open my temple at this time, both as a place of shelter and a safe space for the duration of the darkness itself. You have my word that your safety is guaranteed within those walls
I do not currently have the spare power to ensure you are fed. Take this time and knowledge to prepare as you need.
[Perhaps, it would be worthwhile to mention the potential of loss at this time. There are always those in need of reassurance, and yet. They are not the best figure to seek, in such moments. That much has been made clear in the passing months.]
I shall do my best to converse with you now as you desire. It may be one of the few opportunities available, before the start of this conflict.
If we do not speak tonight, may you keep safe and triumph in your battles.

....what exactly is the sun made of it that it dies and is reborn like this?
no subject
[Do they? They do not say.]
I am the Storyteller, not the Astronomer. I cannot know. Have you heard of a beast called the phoenix, Hajime Hinata?
no subject
He stares at them with wide eyes. The pieces visibly click into place inside his head.]
...are you saying that what serves as the sun here is a phoenix?
no subject
[It's possible that even if they weren't joking before, they are now.]
Whether it is alive or not, the concept is very much the same. The sun will die, and then it will rebirth itself. So long as it is given the opportunity. There are more productive questions to be asking than the mechanics, wouldn't you agree?
no subject
You're right. Sorry. These creatures, are they like the apes and you can't tell what they'll do? I'm assuming they've always been out of your sight but you're aware of their existence.
no subject
They will attempt to rout both the Jormun and all of you. They will do everything within their considerable power to ensure that the sun does not rebirth, and that no one is left to bask in the eternal night but them.
[The Storyteller lowers their paw into the sand with an emphatic thud.]
Consider, if you will, the complications should they succeed.
no subject
[He sets his hand down on into the sand in a mirror of Storyteller's gesture. In the past he'd have been upset. He still is but his eyes narrow, flat and determined.]
I won't let them succeed. ...what kind of injuries can I expect? What poisons do they have or kind of toxins they might use to slow us down.
no subject
[They do not sound quite so frivolous this time.]
Their forms are always changing; life in the dark trenches of the ocean are not forgiving to those who remain static. I cannot say for certain what you should expect. If you ask for consistencies... nightmarish things. Beasts with claws, or tentacles. Venomous creatures are likely. Some may seem closer to man. Some may very well beguile you with surprising intelligence and sophistication.
These are no monkeys, my dear boy.
no subject
Hinata drops his hands to his thighs, a tired light in his eyes. Always death. So much of it.]
I know. So, they're not a society that built itself up. They're just nightmares that grew in the dark. ...Thank you, I've got some idea of what to expect to treat. ...were they always like this? I know you said they aren't like the monkeys but if I look at their past I might find something we can use.
no subject
[The Storyteller responds slowly. Their tone is not unsympathetic.]
That very well depends. What is it that you hope to find, Hajime Hinata?
no subject
It won't be much. But I have to try. And maybe I can understand a little more about this world.
no subject
[The Storyteller sounds impassive.]
I fear my time for telling stories has long passed. You are welcome to ask the Jormun; their tales are far more intertwined. My duty is to further your stories. And I will impart this: these creatures are the villains in this chapter.
Were they always like this? Why do they hate the sun? Or is it their current home that they despise so? Backstories are all the rage. But rarely are they truly required.
no subject
[He leans back, noting the Jormun. He is long overdue a chat with them.]
But you're right I should talk to the Jormun.
no subject
Still, yes. The Jormun remain your greatest resource for information in this matter. I am certain Munin took care not to entangle you all in the finer details, but her race and these creatures have been rather unfriendly neighbors for a very long time. Their politics -- their history -- is not mine to share.
