[MU] - DECEMBER STORYTELLING / MEMORY SHARE

Something is wrong.

This may not very well be obvious, at first. The Storyteller is not present to put forth yet another diatribe, informative or apologetic, and the backdrop of guttering flame and sandy campfire is as present as ever...albeit briefly.

Those who tell their stories will start to notice something...odd taking place. Indeed, no matter how they intend to begin their tale, the land of Mu will immediately start to warp to accommodate it, or something utterly unlike it, until storytellers and listeners alike may find themselves in an exact recreation of a seemingly random memory, in the most stark and painstaking of detail. There is no altering the memory, nor is there any preventing it once it's begun to play - you will simply have to witness memories that are not your own this go around.

Furthermore, stories that take place in worlds other than LifeAftr will be, frankly, inevitable. Those memories, too, will be recreated, to be relived by the teller and lived by the listener.

It is time, once more, for you to tell a story...with a slight twist! This is, in fact, our first player plot, as provided by Dragon! The initial setting will be familiar for oldcomers, and newcomers will recognize it from the introduction they received in their dreams.

Yet for this Storytelling only, people can imagine whatever stories they wish, from both their homes and their time on LifeAftr, as long as they don't mind the fact that others will be reliving those stories in the form of an impromptu memory share.

Even those who prefer not to voice their stories aloud are not safe this time around. If the memory is recalled in essence, Mu will shift to accommodate it in full.

There is, however, a benefit to this: those who venture memories to be relived will receive both a befuddled apology from the Storyteller, who will assert that this was most definitely not meant to happen (they're the Storyteller, not the Rememberer!), as well as a tired promise that the relived memories will be worth two offerings each, as if in compensation.

Not that it counts for much, probably.

He’s said this before: Laurent has a highly developed instinct for deception. He might have been too compromised to catch most of the compliments, but with his full attention on Damen it's going to be a lot harder to get away with this one. The blonde’s eyes narrow like a bloodhound scenting prey.

"And after the trial? “

There's a sharpness in his tone that suggests he already knows the answer. This would be a very bad night to bring up that last memory now, that is one very bad way to break the news.

rip.

Too late. He can't quite stop himself from thinking of it and then it's happening. Everything is happening so much.

The memory ends mostly because he doesn't remember what happened afterwards very clearly. He thinks Nikandros showed up, maybe? There's a whole stretch of days he's not entirely sure if he was awake or dreaming for, honestly.

When it ends, Damen isn't quite looking at Laurent, because he's trying his damnest not to think of the next thing he remembers clearly: Laurent sleeping next to him, still covered in his blood.

"If you'd like me to stop endangering myself," he says quietly, "you might try doing the same."

Storytelling is the gift that keeps on giving. Laurent turns his head sharply at the sound of Kastor’s voice, his fingers going around to grip Damen's wrist. His voice is neutral, even casual, but he's pulling Damen away from the campfire with a force made harsh by duress.

“Come away from the fire.“

When Kastor stabs Damen his fingers claw deep into skin- the most obvious sign of the tension that spikes throughout his entire body- but quickly, he makes them relax. He keeps himself calmly put together, simply observing the scene, and when the scruffy shadow of himself appears on the steps Laurent turns back to Damen with minimal panic. Kastor can go deepthroat a sword; Laurent no longer cares, Laurent figures from a three-second pass of the scene that his past self will take care of it.

He pokes around where the wound should be. The touch is gentle.

"How long has it been? Do you still need medication? Oh, Damianos. Then who will keep you from ending up like my dear brother?“

When Damen speaks he thinks of the contract- the gem sitting like an unforgettable promise on his wrist- that Damen has never approved of, might even be angry over. But that boat has long since sailed. Honestly, everything that has happened so far is only convincing him that Kyuubey was a good choice. It's like nothing short of divine intervention will keep this idiot alive.

“If you're talking about Kastor, I knew I was going to win. “

"No, I'm not talking about that." Damen's not angry, exactly. He's just really exasperated because he gets the feeling that Laurent will never understand what he's saying. "I'm talking about how it's fine for you to . . . sell your soul, or whatever it is you did. It's fine for you to be on trial, but every time I get so much as a scratch you act like this."

It's one of the things he loves about Laurent, the way he tries to solve every problem and plan for every eventuality. On the other hand, Laurent's plans occasionally hinge on Damen being willing to sit on the sidelines and watch Laurent destroy himself for Damen's gain. He gets it, in the sense that he knows why Laurent does it, but he doesn't like it. In fact, he would very much prefer Laurent cut that shit out.

"It's not me and then you, Laurent." Damen covers where Laurent's hands are prodding and pulls them away to lace their fingers together. "Do you understand? It is us - one word, one kingdom."

"That was not a scratch. “

He has to pause for a moment because Damen is making his insides do things again, and it's making it hard to phrase a good answer to this. The best answer is that it is fine. It makes tactical sense and he has the powerpoints to prove it. But Damen works on a nonsensical logic where Laurent has some kind of intrinsic value, which is equal parts ridiculous and dizzying, and he works with a brazen stubbornness that makes Laurent almost believe him.

But the fact of the matter is that Damen is wrong. It is Damen- who has his humanity, his throne, his place back home- and then Laurent, who has none of the above. The warmth of Damen's hands sets off the rotting sulfur somewhere in between his second and third ribs, the knowledge that this is his fault; but this is beyond fixing. He can only let himself have this, if only for a moment.

Laurent rests his forehead against the crook of Damen's neck and curls his fingers around the man’s hands.

“And there's not much of a kingdom out here.“

"The size of the kingdom is not important, Laurent."

In his mind, Laurent is present and that's enough. That's always been enough - he would have been fine ruling just what they held. He would have been fine settling down and calling everything from Acquiart to Sicyon a kingdom. The important aspect has never been the size of the kingdom to him, but the fact that Laurent would be there ruling it with him. If Laurent had declared a tent their kingdom, Damen would be happy.

"A kingdom can be just you and me, can it not? I don't have your ambition, Laurent. What matters to me is not where I am, but that you are there with me."

To answer a burning question nobody has: no, Damen is not capable of talking without sounding like he's subtly trying to propose to Laurent. That's not a thing. He is, in fact, trying to subtly get Laurent to marry him constantly. He would be much happier if Laurent would say yes one of these days and they could get married, adopt like ten horse babies, and Laurent would (hopefully) stop being Like This all the fucking time.

"And I would like for you to continue being with me, which means I would rather you stop doing things you think will be better for me while constantly sacrificing yourself."

He's lucky the dream is dim, because he's turning a bright scarlet holy shit. But the darkness doesn't cover for him twitching back and covering his face with a hand, his other knee-jerk reaction.

"Technically, no- I mean, I know what you're asking and the answer is yes but you’re stretching the definition too far.“

Whatever Damen thought a trial was he was incredibly wrong, so. Laurent's concerned.

"You know constant sacrifice isn't my method. We should be fine, more or less.”
dedamastai: (have you gone blind?)

[personal profile] dedamastai 2017-12-27 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Damen wants to protest, but he also doesn't want to argue it. Laurent will pull out a itemized list of why he's right or something trying to explain if they keep going and Damen isn't about to try and argue if Laurent is going to lecture him.

"So if I agree to attempt to not endanger myself, you'll agree to do the same?" God he hopes Laurent doesn't want this in writing. It would be very Veretian to require proof of an agreement. "In exchange, you will receive sovereignty in the kingdom of my heart."

Since apparently two people is stretching the definition of a kingdom, according to Laurent, Damen is obviously going to have to give him a different kingdom to rule over. Technically it's one Laurent already ruled over, but it sounds really romantic and shit when he says it out loud so. He's just here to be an embarrassing sap, sorry.

"Yes-”

You know, he doesn't actually need a kingdom. He can live with nothing to his name fine, and he has done that, but then Damen pulls this bullshit and he might seriously die from the shock. Laurent’s blush deepens; he actually sways a little, like he might faint.

“That's- I- go easy on me, please.”

Damen casually steadies Laurent as he sways, like it's a natural thing to do and nothing he has to think about.

"So you would rather I didn't repeat myself until you're used to my affection?" Because he will. He'll say it in as many ways as he can think of until Laurent believes it. "I think I can do it in Patran, if you prefer."

Declaring his love may or may not be the only Patran he remembers how to use off-hand because Damen has priorities and they're almost universally bad.
