Something is wrong.

This may not very well be obvious, at first. The Storyteller is not present to put forth yet another diatribe, informative or apologetic, and the backdrop of guttering flame and sandy campfire is as present as ever...albeit briefly.



Those who tell their stories will start to notice something...odd taking place. Indeed, no matter how they intend to begin their tale, the land of Mu will immediately start to warp to accommodate it, or something utterly unlike it, until storytellers and listeners alike may find themselves in an exact recreation of a seemingly random memory, in the most stark and painstaking of detail. There is no altering the memory, nor is there any preventing it once it's begun to play - you will simply have to witness memories that are not your own this go around.

Furthermore, stories that take place in worlds other than LifeAftr will be, frankly, inevitable. Those memories, too, will be recreated, to be relived by the teller and lived by the listener.

It is time, once more, for you to tell a story...with a slight twist! This is, in fact, our first player plot, as provided by Dragon! The initial setting will be familiar for oldcomers, and newcomers will recognize it from the introduction they received in their dreams.

Yet for this Storytelling only, people can imagine whatever stories they wish, from both their homes and their time on LifeAftr, as long as they don't mind the fact that others will be reliving those stories in the form of an impromptu memory share.

Even those who prefer not to voice their stories aloud are not safe this time around. If the memory is recalled in essence, Mu will shift to accommodate it in full.

There is, however, a benefit to this: those who venture memories to be relived will receive both a befuddled apology from the Storyteller, who will assert that this was most definitely not meant to happen (they're the Storyteller, not the Rememberer!), as well as a tired promise that the relived memories will be worth two offerings each, as if in compensation.

Not that it counts for much, probably.

[Mickey should be well aware by now that these are memories, reluctant glimpses into the past, so nothing can be changed. He knows that, he's not stupid.

Yet the sight of the Drifter being so viciously and unfairly attacked makes logic pause.]

H-Hey, stop it! STOP IT! They didn't do anything, leave them alone!

[He tries to run in, as if he could possibly do something, but soon it's all over, nothing to be said or done. Mickey releases a breath, and looks at the drifter sadly.]

[The Drifter watches.]

[That is, the Drifter of the present day watches as Mickey protests without purpose, failing to alter a memory long past. His bravery is commendable, but without a cause, there is nothing upon which he might direct it.]

[They watch their younger self limp away, unblinking. They cannot pity them. Self-pity achieves very little.]

[Startled, Mickey turns towards the 'Real' Drifter.]

But... but it's not fair! You can't judge people altogether like that, everyone is different! You're different!

[Of course, the point of ranting about it now is moot. He drops his head.]

... Wasn't right of 'em.

[The Drifter lifts their shoulders slightly in a partial shrug. What is it they can do to contest it? They are not immune to the sins of their kind, and this is their path and their pain to bear. They lived through it, at any rate.]

[That just leaves Mickey puzzled.]

How can you learn anything when you weren't the one doing wrong?

[And they did learn; this would be the last time they ventured here. Never did they look back, and never did they seek to return.]

[Welp. Can't argue that logic. he feels a little embarrassed now.]

[The Drifter turns away from the scene, and lets the memory fade back to the log splayed in front of the campfire, illuminating the night with guttering flame.]

[Mickey watches the drifter for a moment before speaking again.]

The world you come from... It's pretty rough, isn't it?

[A nod. Yes. Yes, it is. An Immortal Cell poisons the world, and its corruption seeds into the populace, eroding unity and driving them to do terrible, terrible things.]

[Mickey's looks down. He wants to say he's sorry, but that won't do a lot of good here. He rubs the back of his neck.]

I, uh... I know we're all sharin' things we didn't mean to share. So I won't tell anyone what I saw, all right?

[The Drifter lifts their shoulders in a mild, partial shrug. What reason has anyone to hide it?]

If you say so... But I still don't like this. I hope the Storyteller has a good explanation for it all.

[The Drifter’s answer is characteristically solemn.]

It's worth a shot. Even if the Storyteller doesn't know what happened, I'd rather take a chance.

[The Drifter nods, but offers nothing more. What more can they say? What more needs saying?]
