[Far, far too much goes over her head.

To a girl who reveled in stories about bears eating porridge and hungry caterpillars, this is too much. It's too difficult a concept to wrap her young mind around and all she sees is-

Shin, at first. A man that started his mission doing what he thought was right for the world. Who sought out a way to save it, to connect the people around him, and who suffered for that ideal. He became bitter, angry, lost and in later years, when he was the only one around, Ren could feel it. It permeated the entire lab. The whole building. It twisted and twisted until she couldn't tell what belonged to him anymore.

Shin, who she fears. Even after seeing him move on with the catalyst he loved. Even after he spoke kindly to Seto and after experiencing his memories in Shiro, she can't stop the shiver that runs down her spine when she thinks of him. There's too much history. Too much she couldn't do in his presence.

She couldn't help him. She couldn't fight him. She couldn't stop him. And-

She sees it all in the Batter now. A man who wished for the world to be pure and who killed others to continously achieve that goal.

It's not the monstrous form his body starts to shift into-not the way his face elongates into something that looks straight out of her nightmares that makes her body stiffen and her eyes widen-

completely and utterly full of fear.

It's the crystal clear image she sees in her own mind's eye. The vision of a man in all white who destroyed the world once and tried to do it again. Who only felt remorse in the presence of a brave boy that did everything in his power to save him. A trait she doesn't share with her friend, in any sense of the word, and it takes every bit of her to remember how Seto stood there. How brave he was.

She tries to copy him.

Her back straightens and the frightened look in her eyes never vanishes, but Seto isn't here. Seto can't get rid of the ghostly image of a man she fears and even if he were, it's the echo of something only she can see.

And she's absolutely scared. The few pieces of his story she can form I killed them and I destroyed and That's who I am and-

You hold seashells.

[In an unsteady, shaky voice that comes out far quieter than she expects.]

You play baseball.

[She's terrified of Shin.]

You like pretty water.

[She's terrified of him.]

You smiled at me.

[But she stays.]

That's who you are now.
